Timeline

5-10 years: the high-speed computer makes the process of every parts of my project immediately that the time delay is unrealized to human sense. So Panoramic Image Positioning System comes true

20 years: the magnetically suspending sphere will be developed. And the unlimited 2D space under the feet will be transformed into 3D movement.

30 years: Internet and informational system will be highly developed our earth becomes a cyber-sphere that everything is cybernetic.

50 years: globalization and unification of the world completes.

2.   Panoramic Image Positioning System:

The music theorist Dmitri Tymoczko’s “The Geometry of Music” inspired this idea of me. In his research, he sought to translate the basic concepts of music theory into the language of contemporary geometry. PIPS is a system transforming physical properties into perceptual properties.

(The ice river in the future is just like a piece of optical fiber.)

The Panoramic Image Positioning System I created works like a mapping system. For instance, if the sound signal is (x’, y’, z’), highly speedy computer will link the point in the sphere to the center and position the specific circle, rectangular or some shapes of the screen, which is the whole inner surface of the sphere. The distance between the point and center determines the size of the real-time film piece. And if this piece of sound last 3s, the film last 3s in the space of cone’s holographic virtual reality.

Furthermore is the symbolism of the system. Into the sphere, or Earth, everywhere or every single point can be cybernetic by the PIPS. It’s my imaginary condition of our Earth within 50 years in the future.

Historical Background

There are two main elements of my projects. The first is about the mechanics design. I want to create a model resembling the Earth and Universe. So it was inspired by the movie, “I, robot.” I still remember the moment that an Audi conceptual car was suddenly turning over a large angle of corner without down turning the super high speed. This question annoyed me for a long time later until I found a car called Audi RSQ on the Internet. It’s designed to have four sphere-shaped wheels that make every turning instantly without losing speed and energy. So I begin to think maybe it would come true someday that a magnetically suspending sphere can be built in 3D space and if there is a point (or a small surface in my work) can interact in 2D space with 3D. Also, just the Earth floating in the universe, my sphere can suspend in the 3D space with the help of magnetic theory in the future.

Another aspect is the interactive mimic process. The radial-like process (only has a beginning but no end) was somehow inspired by Robert Fludd’s “Water Screw” perpetual motion machine on the year of 1660. It’s the first recorded attempt to describe such a device in order to produce useful work. Unlike physics in the material world, this idea came true in the world of immaterial sense, like the world of art, communication or information. Things like information can be copied but the energy cannot. The idea can be traced back to 12th century; “Perpetuum mobile OF Villard De Honnecourt”.

The most influential background is the Spiral Jetty by Smithson. Circle, in my opinion, is the most mysterious and meaningful geometrical shape. In ancient China, people believe the afterlife is the conjoint of a straight line to be a circle. So life is interpreted as a circle, rotating perpetually. The circle has directivity forming by the timeline.

In the concept of Spiral Jetty, Smithson indicated the directivity of the change of entropy and installing this concept into natural world: “imagine a sandbox filled on one side with white sand and on the other with black. A little boy begins to run around the enclosure in a clockwise direction, kicking up the sand as he goes and mixing together the dark grains with light. He is then told o reverse his course and run counter-clockwise. This will certainly do nothing to undo the movement toward uniformity and re-sort the two colors into separate fields. As his legs continue to churn, the process of entropy will, irreversibly, only progress and deepen.”

My quotation: “There is no place to quit. But just the duration of finding the exit.” I believe through the progress finding the exit, casualness and chaos increases as same as entropy.

Also, as seen in Smithson’s work, the Spiral Jetty was located with a strong reference of nature. In the future, the natural was spilled by human with the avarice of copying and invasion of the production. So I decided to arrange a worldwide online-based vote to evaluate the most disgusting place in the world and then reside my piece at that very location as on one hand strengthen the contrast feeling between the reality and virtual reality of natural scenery leading by the music and on the other hand to warn people protect the environment.

The last background I would like to list here is the “Machine with Concrete” by Arthur Ganson.

His work makes me think about the dual sustainability of my project: not only the permanent process of the interactive art, but also the ever-moving sphere. The motion of the sphere in my piece, not like the motion of the gears in Machine with Concrete, which will last for a countable time, will gain the motivation to rotate by the creativity and thought of people. So if the person leaves the system, the desire to explore his/her twisted and broken countenance in the virtual reality goes away. Therefore, without the inception of human, fault age comes out. Actually as people get used to the system, the algorithm can be changed towards more interest. Or people become master that they can find a way both enjoy the aural and the visual experience. A database will store everyone’s performances in a time capsule. It’s the proof that human still have artistic mind.

Abstract

“There is a black door in everyone’s heart, no one knows what’s in it. However, once you entered, there is no place to quit. Just experience the duration of finding the exit”

As in the future about 50-100 years later, the ubiquitous Internet and other information technology will change the Earth into a cyber sphere. Our world will be highly crowded by the expanding information. The natural world becomes less and less vibrant as the increase of environmental pollution or kinetic control over natural elements. As in Thomas Pynchon’s short novel “Entropy”, the social entropy is constantly increasing and one day to the heat death. The mass of transformation through different sources of energy and large amount of productions of human being leads chaos of the world. In this situation, how human identify himself or herself? Facing this chaos, what should people choose to be?

The idea of my project is to build a system resembling and symbolizing the changing Universe and our Earth in the future. What’s inside is the process of a metaphor to The Second Law of Thermodynamics through the interface between human emotion and art.

Symbolism (monumental)

My proposal is to build a magnetically suspended sphere inside two identical circular cones combined as a shape like diamond. The top of the cone is a singular point, which is the beginning point (zero-dimensional—-still in debate) of the Universe. The upper-cone symbolizes the expanding Universe from the pinnacle to the horizon of the sphere center. The lower-cone is the representation of the opposite of the Universe, which is nothing.

In order to compensate the loss of natural environment in the future, the inner surface of the upper-cone has a holographic projector generating the scenery of the nature from the database connecting to internet: the sea, the woods or the mountains…

A neural sensor worn on the participant captures the heartbeat, brain wave by defining as sad, happy, exciting, angry, blue…(list of human emotion: http://www.buzzle.com/articles/list-of-human-emotions.html) and the tendency of change.  The 3D nature scene, symbolizing the unlimited space, changes as his mood changes. With the help of sphere, Earth, my participant can walk freely to everywhere inside the VR and the sphere rotates.

A small camera is recording the real-time countenance of the person’s face and it will be radiated on the inner surface of the sphere above, a face of human shining on the whole Earth. So human being’s face is twisted into the shape of sphere.

The sphere, symbolizing the Earth, was filled with three-dimensional coordinate as a “cyber-Earth” (x, y, z), which corresponds to the Pitch, Loudness and Timbre (quantified by an algorithm) of the real-time sound created by the people who access the whole system using a MIDI sampler with the maximums of the three factors of hearing sense as its maximums. A Panoramic Image Positioning System (see Research) captures the part of twisted face and then immediately sends the signal by telematic organ onto the VR from the upper-cone.

So the process is that once the person started to improvise his music no matter from consciousness or sub consciousness, he is facing his own countenance broken and twisted in parts that he will never see his intact face.

Hypothesis: Is there an end of music composition, fine art, and sculpture…is human thought a countable power as same as electric or mechanics? There is an origin of thought and the system helps you choose the informational world with your own inception. Think about a person who has never listened to rock music. How can he compose the metal riffs? A person who has never listened to Chopin or Bach, ect. How can he identify the Amold Schoeberg as the master of Modernism? There is an origin of art or information that once the person started the music, there is no way to quit and no one will be the same. He is walking, improvising, and finding himself permanently. Once stopped, the system’s condition remains until he resumes. The system I designed argue the permanent movement of the Earth therefore as a metaphor of permanently journey to find the intact “face” of himself/herself, the person will never stop walking into the depth of the natural VR containing his broken piece of countenance, like a pilgrim cuz he/she will never find the mirror-quality of himself/herself but just the entropy, increases constantly as possibilities increases.

What is ironically presented here is the mimic of the second law of thermodynamics through art and thought. The entropy is constantly increasing, not matter social, informational or thematic entropy. What was transformed here is the thought to sound to visual. The creativity of the person is the input and the output is the parts of his countenance of portrait. His is the painter of his own portrait with inevitable loss of the intact face. But what is art no matter the form? It’s the language of human with uniqueness and aesthetic. As I mentioned before, the assimilation and globalization of people in the world will be highly developed even completely in the phase of humanity or sociology 50-100 years later. Suppose someday there is no composition but just the unleashing power that running every possibility of the MIDI sampler, the Panoramic Image Positioning System will send an intact real-time signal of the countenance to the screen in front of him/her. No need to walk in the 3D VR anymore because the pilgrim to find the identification himself is COMPLETE. No creativity, no transformation between art forms, the entropy is zero.

Of course the process is not the second law. But that’s the art of process through mimic and metaphor in the future; I try to create a way of independent form of art, a way originating from life but never becomes real. So what I am thinking about is the distance between material world and mental world. I believe the distance will be shortened and shortened because everything becomes decentralized, more integrated and more independent in the future. People lived in 1900s going to art gallery to see the exhibition of Picasso cannot imagine a flash drive teemed with images in hand.

Continuation:

The mirror system will record the music, the parts of faces and VR that there is no end and the participant can resume whenever with no break.

People are facing more and more choices as time passing by. Every time he comes back, the process Finally, one morning after wake up, we need to choose what should we be. I believe music can help people shape the real themselves; for instance, when I got a pretty low grade after an intensive process of study, I would like to listen Nirvana or other punk, grunge music because somehow the music released my tension and depression.

The system will collect dynamic data and never has an end. When you feel lost, the neural sensor will input your moods and the database output your own music. If considering the prototype of a person as the one in Mirror system, the person becomes himself again with the help of music.

DXARTS, Extra Credit Project

“Dream of Maximus”

It’s a re-experience of my Monday night’s dream: I was walking heavily and hard to the Art Building to find out the Photo Studio and editing my picture, whose color tone and exposure annoyed me so much recently that I just cannot find a sense of what I desired it to be.

So I decide to create a piece of electric sound through Pro Tool and then embed it into the video typing after modified.

The idea is, like there is a limitation of every single way to communication: camera, instrument, drawing, musical art, poem, high-tech…. So the only way to unleash our thoughts totally is the transformation and synthesizing throughout muti-media.

The music, the color tone, the walking speed and the way to render the video are all changeable. As I approach to the studio closer and closer, the intensity and deepness of music becomes more apparent. Finally the studio for Photo editing and Film developing is just Black and White. Therefore, my dream ends.

HM 7. Cyborg “Binary Opposition”

DXarts 200 Homework 7: Cyborg

Shaoyu Su 0928808

“Binary Opposition”

My inspiration comes from my recent mood and tossing coin game. When you encountered a dilemma, tossing coin seemed to be a casual method to decide as if throwing yourself into fate. For example, tail means major in CSE whereas head means major in DXarts that the moment tail on the table you suddenly know you don’t want it because when facing two equally desirable choices, it’s really hard to decide directly. Negative way works better now. These days, I was in a strong self-suggestion about everything. The left was fire and the right was ice and they were created all by my own mind.

So I begun to think that maybe I was just apiece of white paper. I need a Cyborg accompanying with me to reduce my self-suggestion and broad my creativeness without just plain imagination.

There are three features of my Cyborg. Opposition: contrary side to notice me what I want; People’s thoughts are too dispersive and without limitation so that the downturn effect, going the opposite and limited way of thinking can somehow stimulate my nerve. Simplify: materialize and simplify everything with digital analysis of visual or auditory elements of my life through machinery equipments ; High-tech sensor: sharpening my sense. Like the glasses below:

For instance, there is a picture, which causes me into thought somehow. And by simplifying it into an ordinary object of Cyborg, I realized every option of changing it has and finally knew what I was thinking about in my head. The cyborg has aural, visual sensor to analyse every property of the object.

It was transformed to be a watermelon, which is everyday object. My point is that the contrary side was always more critical and sensitive than the front side. It can alleviate my bad self-suggestion and stimulate my creative mind.

“You can create everything but there is no place to quit, no exit.”

At the end, with the help of my cyborg, I could be more powerful to realize the world around me. It can be a robotic arm to extend my range of touch or just an optic apparatus installed on my eyes to sharpen my sight.

All in all, cyborg was seemingly the opposite side of human. But it’s the binary opposition making the world a harmony between human and machine.
